A software developer had their custom code tooling reject their work four times in one day.

Every mistake stemmed from treating tool outputs as evidence for entirely different questions.

Reliable guards must prove they can say no before proving they can say yes.

Most developers are familiar with running tests, watching them pass, and shipping the code. However, trying the reverse approach—building a check that must refuse and proving you have witnessed it say no—is a completely different challenge. For one software developer, a single working day turned this perspective upside down when their self-built tooling blocked them four times consecutively, prompting them to document the recurring pattern.

All four failures wore different disguises while sharing the exact same root cause: taking an output produced by a tool and treating it as evidence for a different question. First, a network scan found an active service and concluded the target lived there, overlooking that it was merely a leftover process from an older model. Second, an error message read from a stored record almost led to rewriting a fix that had already been resolved three days prior.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

In the third instance, a verification loop flagged two passing test files as failing because it searched the output text for the word red, and a German word happened to contain those exact three letters. Finally, adding a file to a build without including it in the manifest resulted in a successful report build that immediately crashed upon executing the first command. These occurrences exposed the dangerous gap between the narrow question in a developer's mind and what the tooling actually reported.

4Rejections by custom tooling in one day

The hardest part to accept was realizing that for every guard ever written, developers can confirm it passes, but most cannot recall ever watching it fail. A guard that has only ever remained green is merely a decoration that happens to match the correct color, and it will continue displaying that color even after it stops functioning. Therefore, validating a guard requires two specific cases in strict order: first, prove it says no when it should, and second, prove it says yes when it should.

"A guard that has only ever been green is not a guard. It is decoration that happens to be the right colour"
Heinrich Neb

From a modern software engineering perspective, the concept of defensive coding and robust test guards is vital for maintaining high code quality. Writing tests that only verify the happy path (Green Tests) is insufficient because it fails to validate whether the test framework can actually catch regressions. Enforcing negative test cases first ensures that automated tooling possesses genuine detection capabilities rather than providing a false sense of security.

Ultimately, being rejected by your own tooling four times in a single day is not a bad outcome; it is the day the tooling finally earns its keep. By redesigning checks to actively verify responses rather than passive file lists, development pipelines become significantly more resilient against silent failures and human oversight.

Source: Dev.to

The application allows pet owners to upload a photo of their dog, optionally accompanied by a bark, whine, or sigh, prompting the system to generate a warm, short letter written directly in the dog's own voice.

The primary goal behind this project was to bypass the typical pattern seen in most pet applications that simply default to uploading a photo and receiving a random label. Instead, Pawscript is designed to be genuinely grounded in the specific photo provided, meaning the exact same dog scanned twice will produce genuinely different letters rather than a recycled, copy-paste result.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

The development journey began with a preferred user interface featuring a five-paw scanning progress meter equipped with a breathing and pulse animation. By allowing models to interpret acoustic tones alongside visual cues, developers can create deeply immersive applications that bridge the gap between human interpretation and artificial intelligence in consumer tech.

At the core of the application is a single multimodal call sent to Gemini, containing the uploaded image and inline base64 audio. System instructions require the model to reference specific visible details—such as coat, posture, setting, and expression—preventing generic responses. Furthermore, the system enforces a strict structured JSON output comprising letter, mood_tag, observations, and used_audio fields to streamline UI parsing.

The trickiest aspect of the build involved handling the optional audio path, instructing Gemini to fuse acoustic tones like a bright yip or low grumble into the letter while strictly avoiding invented sound characteristics when no audio is provided. Additionally, privacy remains a core focus: nothing uploaded is stored, as photos and audio go straight to Gemini for analysis and are never retained.

Source: Dev.to

A timing bug made a generated music rhythm more musically interesting.

Over-correcting input data made the musical draft feel flat and lifeless.

Creative tools should prioritize human decisions over strict technical precision.

A software developer recently shared an insightful experience regarding a web-based music tool they built. The project started as a rough workflow designed to let computers assist with draft rhythms, reducing friction at the beginning of a creative session. The system combined automated clicks, taps, and generated ideas intended for human refinement.

During testing, a minor bug slipped through that was small enough to almost ignore. The beat estimate landed slightly behind schedule, and a generated musical phrase arrived with an unintended lazy swing. While technically suspicious, the output sounded less boring than the mathematically correct version, proving that creative errors can sometimes outshine strict specifications.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

The initial developer instinct was standard: identify the bad assumption and remove it. The tool originally expected tap inputs to act like clean clock signals. However, human drummers and creators do not tap with robotic precision; they hesitate, anticipate, and adjust mid-pattern. A naive tool translates this organic human behavior into pure noise.

"Sometimes the mistake is more interesting than the spec."
Software Developer

When the code was patched to clean up the input, the numbers settled faster and the tempo estimates looked cleaner on paper. Unfortunately, the musical draft became completely flat. It stopped reacting to how humans actually tap and started behaving like a rigid database form that happened to accept rhythm data.

Context Analysis: In product design and software engineering, reducing variance is usually the primary goal to ensure reliability and accuracy. However, in creative software applications, human variance—such as micro-timing shifts and velocity changes—is precisely what injects soul and identity into art. Balancing strict algorithmic automation with human imperfection remains one of the toughest challenges in modern tool design.

This realization shifted the entire product philosophy. Instead of asking how to make tap inputs perfectly sterile, the developer began asking which parts of the human mess deserved to survive. The goal transitioned from achieving laboratory-level BPM accuracy to capturing the pulse before a fleeting creative idea disappears.

Source: Dev.to

AI-assisted software development accelerates code generation, creating gaps between components.

Generated code that passes basic linting and tests can still hide implicit assumptions and boundaries.

Managing reliability requires a structured stack including C4 Model, TLA+, and DST.

Humans must retain the role of verifying intent and building shared models with automation tools.

The code looked good. It linted cleanly. The shallow tests passed. Everyone felt that we had built the right thing. Then the edge case appeared in production.

The developer treated it as normal operating procedure: bugs happen, tickets arrive, patches ship. QA was asked why they had not caught it. But QA never received a model of the system—only an implementation full of assumptions they were expected to reverse-engineer.

This is becoming the defining failure mode of AI-assisted development. We can generate code faster than we can understand the systems it creates. The danger is no longer confined to a bad function or an obvious syntax error. It lives in the space between components: boundaries, state transitions, failure modes, and invariants.

We are not merely shipping code. We are shipping assumptions we can no longer see. A linter can tell us whether code follows a set of local rules. A test can tell us whether selected examples produce the expected result. Neither can tell us what the system must preserve unless someone states it first.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

Relying on generative AI for coding reduces upfront costs and development time significantly, but it introduces structural risks. AI often produces locally plausible results while lacking a holistic system architecture. Adopting formal modeling tools acts as an anchor connecting human intent to machine output.

An invariant is one of those statements: a condition that must remain true across every valid state of the system. An account balance cannot be changed without a corresponding transaction. A private object cannot become public without authorization. Two successful writes cannot silently erase one another.

When invariants remain implicit, clean code can still assemble into an incoherent system. Each component may look reasonable in isolation while the failure waits in a transition, a retry, a race, or a boundary nobody thought to draw.

3Key questions a reliability stack must answer

That is the space AI-assisted development is rapidly filling with code. There was no golden age in which every developer wrote a formal specification before touching an editor. Most teams did not. Earlier software was full of hidden assumptions too, and nostalgia has a habit of removing the inconvenient parts of the past.

But the field did develop disciplines for reasoning above the code: architectural models, state machines, formal specifications, model checking, fault injection, and deterministic simulation. We tended to reserve them for systems where failure was obviously expensive. Everywhere else, rigor was treated as a cost to minimize.

"C4 maps the system. TLA+ states what must remain true. DST tries to make it false."
Dev.to

The C4 model gives software teams a hierarchy for visualizing a system: context, containers, components, and code. It works like a map with zoom levels. At the widest view, we see the system, its users, and neighboring systems. Zooming in reveals applications, data stores, services, components, and relationships.

Source: Dev.to
