They write a system prompt, test it against a few examples, and ship the product. Prompt engineering is inexpensive, fast, and fully reversible. While fine-tuning used to be restricted to teams with dedicated training pipelines and substantial GPU budgets, the order of operations remains unchanged.

Both techniques steer model behavior, but they operate differently. Prompting changes what you say to the model, whereas fine-tuning changes the model itself.

Prompt engineering involves editing what enters the context window without adjusting any of the model weights. It allows you to learn what the model can already do before spending money on training, and it delivers most of the behavioral changes you might need.

This decision is not a one-off choice but an ongoing loop. You should remain in prompt-engineering mode until your evaluation curve flattens out, then check if you possess the two key requirements for fine-tuning: a narrow task and real data.

Prompting will eventually run out of road, with symptoms appearing in a predictable order. At that stage, prompting stops being cheap since engineering hours represent the most expensive line item in most LLM pipelines, making it easy to waste a month nudging a plateaued prompt.

Fine-tuning updates a model's weights based on examples of your desired behavior until the model executes it by default without requiring repeated instructions.

Avoid using inline styles or traditional classes to manage behavioral states.

Convention-based class naming like is- or has- introduces long-term code fragility.

The quell-light.js library advocates for explicit data-* attributes like data-q-active.

Strictly separate behavioral state from visual styling handled entirely by CSS.

A dropdown needs to open. A modal needs to appear. A nav link needs to show which section the reader is currently in. The blunt route is to manipulate element.style.display directly, deciding state and appearance in the same line without leaving anything for CSS to own. Most experienced developers already avoid this approach. Instead, a more common pattern relies on classes such as classList.toggle('is-open'). This represents a genuine improvement, as CSS determines what .is-open looks like while JavaScript merely toggles its presence.

However, complications arise because .is-open shares the exact same namespace as every other styling hook in the codebase. Nothing in the syntax distinguishes it as state rather than appearance. A teammate reviewing the stylesheet six months later has no programmatic way to tell .is-open apart from .card-title other than relying on naming conventions and trusting that the convention has been consistently maintained.

Convention-based boundaries, such as team agreements on prefixes like is- or has- for state classes, function well within disciplined teams where original members remain present. Yet, this approach remains inherently fragile as projects scale, team members rotate, and codebases grow beyond individual memory. Shifting these boundaries directly into syntax helps eliminate ambiguity and long-term maintenance overhead.

The quell-light.js library moves beyond mere convention by explicitly declaring its mandate: it is not a component library, it renders nothing, and its sole responsibility is behavioral stabilization. The most intriguing aspect is not that it avoids inline styles—which most serious codebases already do—but rather what it chooses to use instead of traditional state classes.

State should be represented explicitly as state within the syntax itself, rather than relying on informal conventions. While classes can accomplish this, data-* attributes like data-q-active achieve it with greater clarity because data attributes carry no competing styling meaning. They cannot be mistaken for utility classes, drawn into unrelated specificity conflicts, or broken by inconsistent naming habits across contributors. The complete state vocabulary of quell-light.js includes data-q-toggle, data-q-active, data-q-dismiss, data-q-spy, and data-q-current, describing exclusively what is true rather than how things appear.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

The disclosure modules within the library prove that this discipline holds up under stringent accessibility requirements. Accessible toggles require both ARIA states and stylable hooks, and the file maintains these as two explicit attributes rather than overloading a single class. Focus management enforces strict Tab and Shift+Tab traps within open dialogs while tracking return focus points upon closure—representing true state while leaving visual rendering entirely to CSS. Similarly, the scroll watcher utilizes IntersectionObserver rather than raw scroll listeners to determine active sections through an aria-current attribute.

Ultimately, quell-light.js reinforces the boundary that convention-backed rules are only as durable as team memory, whereas boundaries encoded directly into syntax eliminate that dependency entirely.

Source: Dev.to

These updates test how easily the existing architecture adapts to evolving requirements.

The application now requires a public, unique handle that users can share and search for, independent of their changing email addresses. While the credentials flow was initially set up using email for convenience, it is fundamentally designed around a username-and-password structure. However, collecting unverified emails paired with OAuth introduces potential security gaps if registration happens using a stranger's address, which can be mitigated using email verification features.

Adding a required and unique column like username to an existing database requires a careful backfill migration plan for legacy rows. In this particular implementation, the database was reset entirely to keep the primary focus firmly on adapter and schema modifications rather than writing migration scripts.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

Regarding OAuth mapping, relying solely on email as an identifier creates flaws if a user changes their email and logs in through a different provider route, inadvertently spawning duplicate accounts. The standard engineering solution implemented here is a dedicated LinkedAccount table, allowing a single user record to safely associate with multiple independent provider identities.

With the account-linking table already established, introducing GitHub support becomes streamlined. However, summing data is inherently lossy. A software developer shared on Dev.to about designing a custom metric intended to distinguish between a market maker distributing to retail versus mere wash trading, only to discover that the mathematical formula eventually degenerated into a ratio he already possessed.

The original concept involved dividing volume by trade count on each side to find the average ticket size. If buyers averaged 180 dollars while sellers averaged 27,000 dollars, it would signal market desk presence even when net flow read zero. The resulting ticket ratio formula combined volume quotients and trade count ratios.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

However, algebra revealed that when net flow flatlines—the exact scenario where hidden market asymmetry matters most—the first factor collapses to one, and the ticket ratio degenerates entirely into the count ratio. The two supposedly independent families of fields converged into one. The developer noted that checking the formula algebraically from the start would have prevented this realization from dawning only after sweeping hundreds of tokens.

This case study offers a valuable lesson for quantitative developers and on-chain analysts: relying solely on aggregated summary data can obscure underlying mathematical dependencies. Transitioning to raw transactional data is crucial when high-precision behavioral insights are required.

The solution was not a more complex model, but rather utilizing a different endpoint: /v1/dex/tokens/transactions. This route returns individual swaps complete with side indicators, USD values, and maker addresses, transforming market concentration from an inference into a direct count.

"Same 800 swaps. The sum said balanced; the split said one desk selling to two hundred people."
Edy Cutjong

An analysis of 800 swaps for AUSD on Ethereum captured on September 7, 2026, demonstrated this clearly. While the summary sum reported a balanced market, splitting the tape exposed a single desk selling tokens to two hundred distinct participants using a keyless Python script.

Furthermore, the developer documented three undocumented behaviors of the CoinMarketCap DEX API:

The pagination cursor data.lastId sits on the response envelope rather than the final row, easily causing infinite loops on page one.

Rate throttling frequently arrives as an HTTP 500 status code as often as 429 for anonymous tiers, requiring explicit handling to distinguish from outages.

Three out of four CORS headers are sent, omitting access-control-allow-origin, which causes browsers to discard valid incoming payloads.

Source: Dev.to

arm64 drops big-endian kernel support targeting Linux 7.4

Parallel CPU bringup cuts 192-core boot time by 41 percent

Embedded teams must verify PSCI firmware and BSP configs

Platform direction for arm64 dominated the week as maintainer Will Deacon posted version two of a patch series removing big-endian kernel support, targeted at Linux 7.4, alongside a new 19-patch series bringing parallel secondary CPU onlining through the PSCI v0.2 CPU_ON argument. Concurrently, Linux 7.3-rc2 arrived with scheduler fixes, Buildroot 2026.08 shipped supporting GCC 16 and glibc 2.44, and kernel.org reported that AI crawlers consume roughly a fifth of its git infrastructure capacity.

The removal of big-endian support marks the end of a staged deprecation rather than an abrupt choice. The CONFIG_CPU_BIG_ENDIAN option was made to depend on BROKEN back in version 6.18, rendering the code unbuildable while dead components gradually left the tree. The v2 series posted on 7 September contains 14 patches deleting around 540 lines of big-endian handling from the arm64 tree, removing paths from BPF JIT, crypto assembly, optimised string routines, compat vDSO builds, and the KVM hypervisor while forcing little-endian explicitly during early boot.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

Two specific details matter for embedded teams. First, SETEND emulation for 32-bit user tasks remains intact, ensuring mixed-endian 32-bit userspace continues executing. Second, during review discussions, Arnd Bergmann confirmed that a parallel process applies to 32-bit Arm, where big-endian mode is deprecated in 7.3, the ixp4xx platform runs little-endian, and arm32 removal is anticipated in a subsequent long-term release.

The ongoing removal of legacy architectures and unmaintained configurations from the Linux kernel highlights a broader maintenance strategy aimed at reducing technical debt and improving codebase security. By deprecating features with minimal active testers, maintainers can concentrate engineering efforts on performance enhancements and modern standards that serve active production environments, particularly as little-endian remains the dominant industry baseline.

On the same day, Will Deacon published "arm64: Implement parallel CPU onlining with PSCI v0.2+", a 19-patch series enabling arm64 to bring secondary CPUs into the kernel concurrently instead of sequentially. While architectures like x86, MIPS, and RISC-V already feature parallel bringup, arm64 remained a holdout. This new series supersedes earlier work on HOTPLUG_PARALLEL submitted by Jinjie Ruan of Huawei in June.

41%Boot time reduction on 192-core server

19Patches in PSCI v0.2 update series

The underlying mechanism utilizes PSCI v0.2, which allows the CPU_ON call to pass a context argument directly to incoming CPUs via firmware. This eliminates the serialization bottleneck where each CPU had to identify itself against shared global state, allowing arm64 to drop custom synchronization in favor of generic machinery like HOTPLUG_PARALLEL, HOTPLUG_SPLIT_STARTUP, and core-syncing used by other architectures. Measurements from the predecessor series showed a 192-core HiSilicon server booting its CPUs in 8.6 seconds instead of 14.6, delivering a 41 percent reduction in bringup time.

Source: Dev.to
