The verdict marks the conclusion of a four-week trial examining the deadliest small-boat disaster recorded in the English Channel, which took place in late 2021.

The tragedy unfolded early in the morning on November 24, 2021, after an inflatable boat carrying migrants issued distress calls to both French and British coastguards before capsizing. The disaster resulted in the deaths of 31 individuals, including a seven-year-old child. The victims were mainly Iraqi Kurds, alongside Afghans, Egyptians, and Iranian Kurds, with only two men managing to survive the wreck.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

The court charge sheet detailed that the migrants had been launched from the French coast in a vessel described as poor quality, uncertified, unsuitable for navigation, severely overloaded, and lacking proper life jackets. The trial established that the convicted individuals operated across two distinct cooperating networks—one Iraqi Kurd and the other Afghan—which joined forces to coordinate the cross-channel journey and assemble the migrants at the departure point.

31Migrant deaths in the Channel wreck

10 yearsMaximum prison sentence handed down

2Survivors from the capsized vessel

Unusually, family members of the victims traveled from Iraqi Kurdistan to Paris to attend the hearings from the beginning, offering emotional testimonies about why their relatives boarded the vessel. Omar conveyed that he felt a part of his body had vanished beneath the waves since the wreck. His legal representative explained that Omar survived by clinging to floating bodies and life jackets, keeping his eyes open to prevent falling asleep, and swimming continuously to keep his heart beating.

This landmark trial highlights the intricate cross-border operations of human trafficking syndicates moving migrants through Turkey, Italy, and France toward the UK. Beyond the criminal convictions, the disaster has intensified political scrutiny and strategic shifts in border management between France and the United Kingdom. This decision comes in the wake of numerous lawsuits and complaints from hundreds of visitors alleging they suffered traumatic brain injuries after riding the attraction, which is famous for its 360-degree rotating seats and notoriously long wait times. The ride had already been suspended since July.

Park executives maintained that the ride had successfully passed various safety inspections over the years. However, Six Flags Magic Mountain Park President Brian Oerding stated during a Tuesday announcement that retiring the ride was the right action to take once guest confidence had been compromised, emphasizing that safety remains a core business priority.

16MRiders since X2 reopened in 2008

2002Year originally opened as X

Dordick Law Corporation, the firm representing plaintiffs in civil lawsuits against the park, revealed they were contacted by hundreds of individuals reporting injuries they believe stemmed from the rollercoaster. Although Hawley's family reached a wrongful death settlement with the theme park in August, attorney Brent Wisner called for broader legal reform, proactive regulations, and stricter government oversight of amusement park operations.

Source: BBC World
