Major-General Wade Rutland, Commander of the 1st Canadian Division, explained that a grass fire ignited on a training range before uncommonly strong winds caused it to spread rapidly and alter its trajectory directly toward soldiers participating in exercises.
Earlier reports from local media suggested the fire might have originated when a gas main was struck during a live-firing exercise, but military officials later clarified that investigators do not believe any explosions stemmed from oil or gas infrastructure. The Canadian defense ministry emphasized that the precise cause remains under active investigation while confirming there are no indications linking the incident to terrorism.
