- Phasin Pitutecha warns that the three-airport high-speed rail project is on the verge of collapse.
- The mega-project has faced delays and uncertainty after over 7 years of waiting.
- EEC and Rayong are highlighted as vital economic engines that deserve proper infrastructure support.
- The government is urged to take accountability for broken contracts and wasted state budget.
On November 1, 2026, Mr. Phasin Pitutecha, Deputy Spokesperson for the Democrat Party, held a press conference to voice deep concerns regarding the uncertain future of the high-speed rail project connecting Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao airports. He warned that the ambitious infrastructure project shows clear signs of grinding to a halt, leaving residents in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) and Rayong province disappointed after more than seven years of anticipation.
Mr. Phasin pointed out that several warning signs have emerged, including the EEC Office openly admitting the severe difficulties in pushing the project forward, ongoing issues regarding contract cancellations by the private sector, and the government's continued ambiguity in addressing the crisis. These factors threaten to derail a cornerstone initiative meant to modernize the nation's transit network.
The three-airport high-speed rail link serves as a vital backbone for the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) and overall national logistics. Delays or cancellations not only diminish foreign investor confidence but also disrupt long-term regional development strategies meant to decentralize economic growth.
Furthermore, the eastern region and Rayong province have consistently served as key economic drivers for Thailand's industrial and export sectors. Local residents have continuously cooperated with state policies, yet when the time came to receive a transformative mega-project to boost regional GDP and local commerce, the initiative once again stalled.
Mr. Phasin emphasized that this high-speed railway acts as the crucial first button in modernizing the rail system, with future phases intended to extend connectivity to Klaeng district, Chanthaburi province, and Trat province. The failure of this primary leg jeopardizes subsequent regional infrastructure expansion plans.
