Welsh star Emma Finucane has cemented her place in sporting history by becoming the first sprint cyclist to capture four track gold medals at a single edition of the Commonwealth Games. Her remarkable run culminated with a hard-fought victory in the keirin event.
Finucane added the keirin success to an already impressive haul that included gold medals in the team sprint, individual sprint, and the 1,000m time trial. In the final, she overcame defending Commonwealth keirin champion and Olympic titleholder Ellesse Andrews of New Zealand, who had to settle for second place.

The 23-year-old achieved her quartet of victories across four successive days of competition at the Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow. In doing so, she surpassed previous milestones set by Australian legend Anna Meares and New Zealand's Andrews, who both claimed three track titles in 2010 and 2022 respectively.
Beyond her cycling dominance, Finucane has also written her name into the history books as the first Welsh woman to collect four golds at a single Commonwealth Games. She is now Wales' most successful female athlete in Games history, overtaking para-sprinter Olivia Breen, who had held the record for just two days.
Finucane's historic achievement highlights the absolute peak of modern track cycling conditioning and recovery. Dominating multiple disciplines ranging from short explosive sprints to endurance-testing time trials and tactical keirin races across four consecutive days requires an extraordinary level of athletic versatility.
While Finucane leads the modern generation, weightlifter David Morgan remains Wales' most successful Commonwealth Games athlete of all time, boasting a record of nine golds and three silver medals.
Finucane's victory contributed to Wales' 31st medal of the Games, a tally consisting of nine golds, 10 silvers, and 12 bronzes. Following her unforgettable campaign, the Carmarthen star was chosen to lead Team Wales as their flag bearer for the closing ceremony.
