- England secured a massive victory against Pakistan in the first Test at Headingley.
- The win gives England a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
- Joe Root successfully started his second spell as England captain.
The first Test match between England and Pakistan at Headingley came to a swift conclusion within three days, as the hosts cruised to a dominant victory by an innings and 103 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series under the leadership of returning captain Joe Root.
Following months of off-field turmoil and poor results that culminated in the retirement of former captain Ben Stokes and the departure of head coach Brendon McCullum, this victory marked a much-needed morale boost for England, representing only their third win in 11 matches.

On Friday, a depleted Pakistan side lacking injured captain Babar Azam struggled to cope with the English seamers. After managing 171 runs in their first innings, the tourists collapsed in their second innings, folding for just 135 runs before lunch.
Josh Tongue delivered a brilliant spell after the lunch break, picking up three quick wickets, while Ollie Robinson claimed a career-best match haul of 8-80. Jofra Archer also returned to peak form, dismantling the opposition batting lineup right from the start of day three.
Joe Root's return to the captaincy comes four years after his first stint left him physically and mentally drained. This victory marks his 27th Test win as captain and extends England's remarkable winning streak at Headingley to seven consecutive matches dating back to 2018.
England will now look to wrap up the series when the second Test begins at Lord's on Thursday.
