The Democratic Republic of Congo government and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group have reached an agreement on a roadmap for peace talks following five days of negotiations held in Switzerland.
In a joint statement, both sides committed to pursuing comprehensive peace negotiations and conflict resolution, while also establishing a mechanism to monitor the ceasefire agreement.

The roadmap outlines a timeline for talks under a US-brokered peace framework signed in 2025, though fighting has persisted in eastern DR Congo amid a conflict that has lasted for decades.
The conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is deeply rooted and intertwined with valuable natural resources like coltan, which is vital to the global electronics industry. International mediation efforts led by regional and global partners aim to address these longstanding structural issues.
Despite the breakthrough, significant disagreements remain regarding sanctions against M23, the release of detainees, and the timeline for political reforms. The recent talks included delegations from Qatar, the US, Togo, the African Union Commission, and host Switzerland.
The parties agreed to create a review mechanism tied to the 2025 Doha Framework Agreement. Furthermore, a ceasefire monitoring secretariat has been established, with its first verification mission scheduled for Monday in Minembwe, South Kivu.
