European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the incident in Leipzig marks a direct escalation attributed to Russian operatives on European Union territory. Her remarks followed the German government's confirmation that Russia was behind a failed drone attack targeting a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle airport on August 4, 2026.
According to investigators, the first drone was neutralized by a robot, a second collided with another cargo cargo plane, and a third was discovered ten days later at the airport, a vital NATO hub regularly utilized by Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft. German interior officials noted that the drone components matched those used in previous Russian hybrid operations, and two suspects have been identified, including a Belarusian national carrying a Russian passport and tourist visa.
