US special negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to visit Moscow, Russia, and Kyiv, Ukraine, this weekend as diplomatic efforts to halt the ongoing conflict gain momentum.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that he will hold direct talks with the two US envoys on Sunday. This follows their scheduled visit to Moscow on Saturday, where they are set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
US President Donald Trump told reporters regarding the high-profile trips that the envoys are bringing a concrete proposal designed to end the war, although a significant gulf still remains between the positions of the two warring nations.
While Witkoff and Kushner, who is Donald Trump's son-in-law, have traveled to Russia on multiple occasions in the past, this upcoming trip marks their very first official visit to Ukraine for peace talks. This mission highlights Washington's renewed push to bridge the gap between Moscow's maximalist territorial demands and Kyiv's insistence on protecting its sovereign borders.

Earlier on Friday, President Zelensky reported that a Russian drone had struck the office of Oleksandr Poklad, the head of Ukraine's SBU security service, located in Kyiv. Poklad reportedly escaped unharmed, and Zelensky stated he had ordered the security chief to respond adequately to the strike.
The violence on the ground persisted into the weekend as regional authorities confirmed that four individuals were killed and five others wounded following a Russian attack on the south-eastern city of Kamianske. Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration, provided the figures for the casualties.

Earlier on Thursday, President Putin addressed an international economic forum, stating that chances do exist for a peace deal to be reached, while maintaining that Moscow and Kyiv must first reach an agreement between themselves. However, Putin showed no willingness to back down from his core demands, which include further territorial concessions from Ukraine—terms that Kyiv and its European allies have repeatedly rejected as tantamount to capitulation.
