Sweden's general election remains intensely contested with no clear winner in sight, as the left-wing bloc maintains a razor-thin lead over its rivals while vote counting continues across the nation.
With more than 90% of ballots processed early on Monday, the left-wing bloc pulled ahead by roughly 20,000 votes. Preliminary figures from Sweden's electoral authority projected that Magdalena Andersson of the Social Democrats would likely secure a three-seat majority over the four-party conservative coalition led by incumbent Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
With 95% of votes reported, the left-wing coalition led by the Social Democrats was ahead with 176 mandates compared to 173 for the right-wing bloc. No major media outlets have declared a victor yet, as counting will resume on Wednesday to incorporate late-submitted early votes and ballots from abroad that missed election day.

"Should we have a government entirely dominated by the Sweden Democrats, something that has never happened in Sweden before? Or should we have a government led by me, which will steer Sweden in a new spirit of co-operation?"
Back in 2022, more than 220,000 votes were added during the later count. If similar figures emerge this year, Wednesday's tally could prove decisive given that only about 28,000 votes currently separate the two competing political blocs.
Swedish politics traditionally revolves around two major political blocs featuring four parties each, making coalition and minority administrations a regular occurrence. The involvement of the hard-right Sweden Democrats, founded by Nazi sympathizers, adds significant complexity to government formation.
National security, gang-related crime, and welfare spending dominated the election campaign. Meanwhile, voter turnout dropped to approximately 80%, marking a four-point decrease compared to the 2022 parliamentary poll.
