The push for unionization within the nonprofit organization behind Wikipedia is growing outward. Following in the footsteps of UK staff who announced their intent to form a union back in June, employees based in the United States at the Wikimedia Foundation are now stepping up to join the union drive. However, leadership at the nonprofit has opted against granting voluntary recognition to the emerging union.
In a press release issued by the Communications Workers of America, an organization with which Wiki Workers United is affiliated, the union sharply criticized management for a disconnect between public statements and internal actions.
"When the Foundation rejected our request for voluntary recognition this week, they immediately sent out to employees and the public statements couched in classic union-busting rhetoric, rhetoric undoubtedly provided by outrageously expensive union-avoidance law firms."

The press release characterized the move as an insulting and wasteful deployment of foundation resources directed against both its workforce and the broader Free Knowledge Movement. Meanwhile, the foundation released its own public statement asserting its belief that a secret ballot election facilitated by the National Labor Relations Board serves as the appropriate path forward for all parties involved.
