The Group of Seven (G7) nations have strongly condemned Houthi attacks and pressured Iran to halt its military support for the group, amid escalating fighting along Yemen's Red Sea coastline. The diplomatic push comes ahead of the annual United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to address the summit.
Foreign ministers from the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States jointly called on the Houthis to immediately cease all military actions and threats against civilian shipping. They also urged the group to return in good faith to the political process, warning that these actions threaten global economic stability and international trade.

The crisis intensified after the Iran-backed group seized territory along Yemen's Red Sea coast, including areas near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which serves as a vital gateway for global maritime shipping. According United Nations estimates, more than 120,000 Yemenis have been displaced by the sudden surge in fighting in the region.
While Iran has repeatedly denied supplying weapons to the Houthis and claimed its backing is strictly political, Western powers and naval forces have repeatedly intercepted illicit arms shipments bound for Yemen. A 2024 UN expert panel concluded that the group transformed into a powerful military organization through material transfers and training provided by Iran's Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah.
