  • Infineon opens a semiconductor facility worth over 48 billion THB in Samut Prakan
  • Plans to expand to 5 phases, making Thailand its largest backend production hub
  • The plant operates entirely on automation and 100% green electricity

Infineon Technologies, a global leader in power semiconductor solutions from Germany, officially inaugurated its new backend semiconductor manufacturing plant in Samut Prakan province on October 1, 2026. Backed by an investment of over 48 billion THB supported by Thailand's BOI, the facility aims to meet soaring global demand driven by megatrends such as digitalization, electrification, and energy transition.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Ekniti Nitithanprapas, German Ambassador to Thailand Michael Reiffenstuel, and Alexander Gorskii, Chief Operating Officer of Infineon Technologies.

This new facility is Infineon's third power module manufacturing plant, following those in Germany and China. Operations kick off with Phase 1, featuring a 30,000-square-meter cleanroom. Designed to scale up to 5 modules over the long term, reaching a total cleanroom area of 150,000 square meters—roughly double the size of the company's current largest plant—this positions Thailand as Infineon's largest backend assembly and test manufacturing base in the world.

A key highlight of the plant is that it is Infineon's first autonomous factory combining wafer testing, power module production, and integrated circuit testing under one roof. Powered entirely by 100% green electricity, it features solar panels, water recycling systems, and rainwater harvesting to drive down its carbon footprint. Alexander Gorskii noted that Thailand was chosen due to its robust automotive and electronics industries, existing semiconductor ecosystem, skilled workforce, and strategic location connecting Asian markets.

Power modules are critical components for future industries such as electric vehicles, data centers, and physical AI systems like humanoid robots. The power chip market is projected to expand from 60 billion USD in 2025 to over 107 billion USD in 2035. Infineon selecting Thailand as its massive global production base marks a crucial milestone in upgrading the country's long-term technological capabilities.

Beyond the financial investment, the BOI has outlined cooperation conditions to foster domestic value, including hiring over 5,000 local staff, transferring technology to train over 600 science and tech personnel, sending 130 staff abroad for specialized training, collaborating on at least 60 academic curricula, offering internships for over 1,100 undergraduate students, and conducting no fewer than 18 joint research projects with local institutions to drive the "Chip Made in Thailand" strategy.
