- UKHSA reports 67 cases of cyclospora parasite infection in the UK since April 2026.
- The majority of affected travelers recently visited Mexico, specifically Riviera Maya and Cancún.
- The US is battling a major outbreak affecting over 18,000 people across 45 states.
- Key symptoms include explosive watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, bloating, and up to 20 toilet trips a day.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an urgent warning for British holidaymakers regarding a nasty intestinal infection caused by the cyclospora parasite, following a sharp surge in reported cases. Since April 2026, health authorities have documented 67 cases nationwide, with a significant portion involving travelers returning from Mexico.
This domestic uptick runs parallel to a massive outbreak across the United States, where more than 18,000 individuals have been infected across 45 states. While the exact source remains unidentified and no deaths have been linked to the US outbreak so far, UK data compiled between April 30 and July 15, 2026, shows 30 cases in England, 27 in Scotland, and 10 in Wales.
Out of 52 cases with available travel details, 48 individuals confirmed traveling to Mexico, many staying at white-sand beach resorts in Riviera Maya or slightly further north in coastal Cancún. The UKHSA noted that those affected stayed across a variety of different hotels and consumed numerous food and drink options as part of their all-inclusive holiday packages.
The illness stems from the cyclospora parasite, which can contaminate fresh food items such as salads, herbs, and soft fruits. Experts emphasize that the parasite is not naturally occurring in the UK and cannot spread from person to person. However, the physical toll can be severe. Nick Palmiter, a 29-year-old from Monroe County, Michigan, told the BBC he experienced constant pressure and bubbling, describing it "almost like you have a balloon in your stomach." Other sufferers reported needing the toilet up to 20 times daily due to frequent, explosive watery diarrhoea.
Cyclospora outbreaks are frequently tied to consuming contaminated produce or water in endemic regions, as the microscopic parasite can easily cling to raw vegetables and unpeeled fruits despite washing. High-end all-inclusive resorts are not immune, as food preparation involving raw ingredients always carries inherent risks. Travelers are advised to strictly adhere to bottled water and thoroughly cooked meals rather than relying solely on the star rating of their accommodations.

Dr Philip Veal from the UKHSA advised anyone developing symptoms after returning from travel—such as watery diarrhoea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, or fatigue—to seek medical attention and explicitly mention their travel history. While most infections clear up on their own, antibiotics can be prescribed for severe or prolonged cases. The agency expects further cases to emerge alongside increased summer travel to Mexico and the US.
