Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has told BBC Sport that supporters, including himself at age 55, owe a massive debt of gratitude to Eddie Howe for delivering the best day of their lives as fans by winning the Carabao Cup at Wembley in 2025.
Howe took charge in November 2021 when the club sat 19th in the Premier League, five points from safety after 11 matches. He safely maintained their top-flight status before securing fourth, seventh, and fifth-place finishes in the following three seasons alongside memorable Champions League nights.

However, the landscape shifted last summer following the departure of Alexander Isak and missed transfer targets, a trend that continued this year and ultimately influenced Howe's decision to walk away just three weeks into pre-season and three weeks before the Premier League restart.
The club has continually sold its best players—from Isak to Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer—while facing ongoing speculation over captain Bruno Guimaraes.
