Although she escaped physical injury, law enforcement confirmed her brave intervention almost certainly halted further bloodshed.
Authorities identified the shooter as 16-year-old Griffin J John II, a former special education student at the elementary school. Police stated that the attacker used a shotgun to fire as many as 15 rounds inside the classroom and was carrying approximately 44 additional rounds of ammunition when he was stopped. The turning point arrived when Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter and father of two daughters at the school, was driving past after lunch. Witnessing the suspect open fire on a vehicle outside and shoot through a window to enter, Giamanco retrieved his pistol, ran inside the building, and confronted the gunman, fatally shooting him.

Active shooter incidents in educational institutions represent a persistent public safety crisis in the United States. Law enforcement data consistently demonstrates that split-second interventions by on-site educators or armed bystanders can drastically limit casualties before police arrive, underscoring the critical importance of immediate resistance in active threat scenarios.
Police have executed a search warrant at the suspect's residence as investigations continue into his movements on foot and how he acquired the weapon. Meanwhile, the local community in Bend continues to mourn the victims, holding candlelight vigils to honor those lost in the devastating attack.
