More than 150 migrants have been rescued after the vessel they were using to cross the English Channel caught fire on Tuesday morning, according to French authorities. The boat was attempting to make the crossing to the United Kingdom when its engine suddenly ignited.
The French maritime prefecture of the Channel and North Sea reported that 157 individuals were rescued and are being transported to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. There are currently no reports of any injuries or deaths resulting from the incident. The rescue comes just a day after Prime Minister Andy Burnham promised his administration would remain relentless in reducing small boat arrivals into the UK.

The English Channel remains one of the world's busiest and most hazardous shipping lanes, particularly for overcrowded and structurally fragile small vessels. Migrants frequently refuse initial rescue offers out of fear of being returned before reaching British shores, presenting maritime authorities with complex rescue dilemmas that require balancing humanitarian aid with border enforcement protocols.
French officials stated that the boat departed from France on Monday night. During the overnight hours, five people aboard required assistance, but the remaining passengers turned down help offered by French patrol boats as they remained determined to reach the UK, accepting intervention only during extreme emergencies.
Due to the structural fragility of the boats used in these crossings, authorities initially chose not to intervene further until the situation escalated. Rescue vessels from both nations deployed to the scene, including the RNLI Eastbourne lifeboat and UK Border Force ships BSC Contender and BSC Courageous. Two French vessels picked up 103 migrants, while British boats rescued the remaining 54.
