During his campaign last year, Mamdani positioned his staunch opposition to Israeli military operations in Gaza as a central platform, pledging to enforce a 2024 arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) accusing Netanyahu of war crimes. However, after pressure from the New York Times last week, Mamdani reversed course, stating that his administration reviewed the law and found they lacked independent legal authority to enforce the warrant. He instead urged the federal government to make the arrest and declared that Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City.

This public dispute highlights the friction between local municipal figures and international geopolitics, particularly regarding the jurisdiction of the ICC in the United States. Because the US is not a state party to the ICC, local city officials hold no independent legal mechanism to execute international arrest warrants without federal intervention.
In response to the developments, Netanyahu referenced a pair of stabbings that occurred in New York on Thursday, where a suspect attacked a Jewish man and an Asian man just blocks apart. According to police, the suspect allegedly shouted "Allahu akbar" during the attacks and has been charged with hate crimes for each victim. Although both men survived and community leaders from both Jewish and Asian American backgrounds condemned the violence, Netanyahu stated that Jewish New Yorkers were afraid right now.
Israel has consistently denied allegations of committing war crimes in Gaza, with Netanyahu dismissing the charges as bogus. The Israeli military entered Gaza following the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in about 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken. According to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza—figures considered reliable by the United Nations—over 73,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since then, including more than 21,000 children.
