The tech giant and the fast-food chain have teamed up to design a wireless computer mouse modeled directly after a classic red carton of French fries, incorporating plastic recovered from old, discarded Happy Meal toys into its construction. This creative partnership merges two familiar elements of the dining experience into a functional daily accessory.

The physical design retains the iconic visual language of the brand. The lower red shell features the Golden Arches, while molded yellow fries extend across the top surface, giving the hardware an irregular silhouette that breaks away from standard office accessories. Transforming disposable packaging into a permanent desktop fixture gives the familiar takeaway aesthetic a new purpose.

Upcycling fast-food waste into functional tech gadgets represents a growing trend in circular economy initiatives. By transforming post-consumer plastic from children's toys into adult office peripherals, brands can successfully engage consumers through novelty while highlighting sustainable material practices. This crossover approach demonstrates how corporate partnerships can rethink waste streams for lifestyle product development.

According to official product details, more than 60 percent of the mouse's exterior casing is manufactured from recycled plastic sourced from collected Happy Meal toys. Lenovo utilizes a specialized processing pipeline involving sorting, shredding, purification, and material modification to produce recycled ABS plastic suitable for hardware manufacturing. While the original toys lose their distinct shapes during this transformation, their material finds a second life.

This release falls under McDonald’s China’s Reimagine Good Things initiative, launched back in 2021 to explore innovative uses for recovered materials. Previous iterations of the program introduced everyday items such as trays and flowerpots. Shifting from playthings to computer peripherals successfully crosses the boundary into adult workspaces while retaining a playful nod to childhood memories.

Photo by Marissa Grootes / Unsplash

60%+Recycled toy plastic casing

380mAhRechargeable battery capacity

Beneath its sculpted novelty exterior, the hardware packs practical tech specifications. Whether answering emails becomes more enjoyable with a side of fries on the desk remains subjective, but the design certainly stands out in a crowded hardware market.

Source: designboom

This research culminated in her 2022 graduation project, The Lac Lab Open Source.

Back in her studio, Merhav tested the material beyond its traditional uses, discovering that it softens when heated and hardens upon cooling, allowing her to stretch and blow it like glass. In downtown El Paso, Texas, Nómada Estudio Urbano explores this question through Desert Playgola, a temporary pavilion that transforms a traditional pergola into an interactive playground. Designed by Miguel Mendoza for the Chalk the Block public art festival held on October 3-4, 2026, the installation combines desert-inspired sculptures, iridescent curtains, and recycled materials to create an environment where children can move, touch, and discover at their own pace. Commissioned by the City of El Paso through its Museums & Cultural Affairs Department (MCAD), the project occupies a pedestrian area along W Main Drive, turning an ordinary stretch of the city into a place for unexpected encounters.

The pavilion is built around a timber framework supported by concrete block bases, featuring hanging iridescent curtains and colorful figures made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Recycled wooden pallets form a series of raised platforms covered in artificial turf, introducing changes in height and texture across the installation. Freestanding sculptures resembling prickly pear cacti are assembled from interlocking MDF pieces, bringing elements of the surrounding landscape within children's reach. Together, these components transform the familiar pergola into a small terrain of passages, surfaces, and objects that invite visitors to explore rather than simply walk through.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

Movement, light, and touch play an equally important role in the experience. Wind animates the iridescent curtains, sunlight projects shifting shadows across the ground, and artificial lighting transforms the pavilion's appearance after dark. Children can pass between hanging elements, climb onto low platforms, examine different textures, or simply find a place to pause. There is no prescribed sequence to follow, and the installation accommodates different ways of engaging with its materials and spaces. The result is a playground that offers possibilities rather than instructions, allowing its youngest visitors to decide what happens next.

Designing urban spaces from a 95-centimeter perspective—roughly the height of a three-year-old child—highlights the growing movement of Child-Friendly Cities urbanism. This approach prioritizes human-scale infrastructure and public spaces tailored to a child's sensory perception and physical reach, moving away from adult-centric urban design. Utilizing recycled and local materials also reinforces sustainable design principles within temporary public installations.

Positioned beside La Nube, El Paso's interactive museum, Desert Playgola extends the idea of playful learning into the surrounding public realm. Its temporary presence during Chalk the Block introduces a different rhythm to the pedestrian route, encouraging visitors of different ages to stop, explore, and share the same space. For Nómada Estudio Urbano, the project reflects a broader interest in making cities more responsive to children's experiences without separating them from everyday urban life. The studio summarizes its approach with a simple premise: a city that plays is a city that cares. In this case, it begins by bringing the city a little closer to the ground.

Source: designboom

Situated at 13 rue de la Paix, between Place Vendôme and the Palais Garnier, the Parisian address underwent an extensive restoration led by interior architect Laurent Maugoust, alongside British designer Helen Stephens who reimagined its restaurant, Le Céladon. Completed a year ago, the project preserves architectural layers accumulated throughout the building's history while introducing contemporary interior spaces.

The property's story traces back to 1802, when Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the sale of land belonging to a former Capuchin convent, commissioning architects Percier and Fontaine to develop the district. Originally named rue Napoléon before becoming rue de la Paix in 1814, the street welcomed Hôtel Wagram in 1807 as the predecessor to today's Westminster. As British travelers settled in the neighborhood, the area gained a reputation as a small piece of London within Paris, a heritage reflected in the hotel's name.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

The building continued to evolve through successive extensions and renovations, most notably between 1905 and 1907 when architect Jacques Marcel Aubertin shaped its characteristic Haussmannian silhouette. Brazilian design studio Rótulo em Branco flips that notion completely with PREGO, a collection of sculptural stainless-steel tables modeled after the familiar construction fastener. Designed by architect Ingrid Sani Lang, the series translates the recognizable silhouette into three distinct furniture typologies: a side table, a coffee table, and a bar table. By dramatically altering the scale, an ordinary industrial element takes on an entirely fresh role within the domestic interior.

Established in 2021 in Blumenau, southern Brazil, Rótulo em Branco approaches furniture as a chance to rethink everyday objects and their practical purposes. With PREGO, the studio explores what occurs when a commonplace item is pulled from its usual context and reworked through proportion, material, and utility. Rather than simply delivering an oversized replica, the designer adjusts the nail geometry to forge functional surfaces that carry a distinct sculptural presence.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

Beyond its striking silhouette, PREGO introduces a system of removable and interchangeable nail heads that let users adapt the tables to different functions. Two versions are offered: a smooth surface crafted for daily essentials, and a sculpted alternative featuring recessed details designed for smaller items or uses such as holding incense. This flexibility challenges the conventional view of furniture as having only one permanent layout, adding a playful dose of visual irony where a fastener designed to stay fixed becomes an interchangeable component.

Elevating mundane construction materials into high-design sculptural furniture reflects a broader contemporary movement bridging functional design and fine art. By utilizing contrasting stainless steel finishes, the designers emphasize structural geometry, demonstrating how everyday industrial components can be recontextualized into expressive domestic objects.

Manufactured entirely from AISI 304 stainless steel, the collection pairs a brushed finish on the main structure with polished surfaces on the nail-shaped parts. All three table types are developed and produced in southern Brazil in collaboration with regional manufacturers. The collection was launched alongside Nowdays, a Brazilian digital platform tied to contemporary internet culture.

Source: designboom

Norman Foster unveils his debut wristwatch created alongside Swiss watchmaker LEBOND

Features a lugless integrated strap design that merges the case and band

Built from Grade 5 titanium with a 38.5mm diameter and 10mm thickness

Powered by a Swiss automatic ETA 2892-A2 movement with a custom rotor

Renowned British architect Norman Foster has expanded his design spectrum from architecture to horology by introducing his very first wristwatch. Developed in collaboration with Swiss watchmaker LEBOND and the Norman Foster Foundation's Innovation and Design Unit, the timepiece applies the architect's signature approach regarding materials, engineering, and functionality to precision timekeeping, reimagining the structural connection between the watch case and strap through a unified silhouette.

For Foster, shifting to a smaller scale does not alter his foundational design philosophy. He maintains that the core questions remain identical regardless of whether he is designing a city, a building, a chair, or a watch: how it functions, how it is constructed, and how all components harmonize. This watch represents a unique opportunity to apply those inquiries to an everyday personal object that accompanies its wearer through professional environments, travel, and private moments alike.

"What is different about a watch is that it is intensely personal. You wear it, you travel with it and it becomes part of your everyday life."
Norman Foster

A defining characteristic of the design is the complete elimination of conventional lugs, the traditional hardware pieces joining a watch case to its band. Instead, the strap seamlessly follows the contours of the case, establishing a cohesive profile that rests more ergonomically on the wrist. Furthermore, the interchangeable strap system empowers wearers to customize colors and materials according to their personal preferences.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

38.5 mmCase Diameter

10 mmCase Thickness

50 mWater Resistance

Technical specifications include a Grade 5 titanium case measuring 38.5 mm in diameter, widening to 40 mm at the strap integration point, with a 10 mm thickness. It is offered in a Natural Titanium Edition with a micro-sandblasted finish and a Black Edition featuring a matte black DLC coating. Both variants incorporate domed sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coatings and 50-meter water resistance. Internally, the timepiece relies on a Swiss automatic ETA 2892-A2 movement equipped with a custom-perforated rotor.

This venture highlights how master architects translate macro-level spatial thinking into micro-scale industrial objects, demonstrating that clarity of purpose and material honesty remain timeless pillars of exceptional design across any discipline.

Source: designboom

The building is instantly recognizable by its five irregular brick towers that rise above a continuous band of glass at ground level. Their sloping walls form a clustered silhouette along the quay, creating a visual effect where the heavy masonry appears to hover over the transparent base.

The forms of the towers in Copenhagen directly respond to the swimming pools housed beneath them. Approximately 300,000 handmade bricks cover the angular surfaces, featuring varying gray tones that harmonize with the surrounding harbor architecture. The masonry is laid in a stepped pattern, giving the sloping walls a textured finish that interacts dynamically with changing daylight. Additionally, 403 windows of different sizes puncture the facades to bring natural light deep into the bathing chambers.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

300,000Handmade bricks

10Swimming pools

403Windows

One of the most distinctive features is the Valley Pool, an open-air swimming basin positioned on the first floor between the five brick towers. Visitors can swim surrounded by textured masonry with a direct view of the sky above. On the same level, a heated outdoor onsen overlooks Copenhagen Harbour, drawing on Japanese bathing traditions. Both outdoor pools are designed for year-round use, powered by a ground-source heat pump system connected to ten boreholes extending 250 meters underground.

Located on Paper Island (Papirøen), the Water Culture House represents a successful blend of modern architectural innovation and public waterfront engagement. Rooted in a municipal design competition launched back in 2015, the project transforms local citizens' visions for public bathing into a tangible architectural landmark that bridges Japanese design sensitivities with Danish maritime culture.

At ground level, KAI contains a 25-meter fitness pool, a teaching pool, and three children's pools, while upper levels feature warmer bathing areas, a cold plunge pool, saunas, and a steam bath. Spanning 5,800 square meters, the facility is set to officially open on December 5, 2026, with public harbor bathing boardwalks expected to follow in early 2027.

Source: designboom
